Our Story

Herbst Eatery & Farm Stand is a chef-driven, neighborhood restaurant and market owned by long-time South St. Anthony Park residents Jörg and Angie Pierach. It’s inspired by an Amish farm stand near the owners’ hobby farm located in Western Wisconsin’s picturesque Driftless Area.  The farm stand is the source of many of the fresh ingredients the Pierachs use to create the almost entirely locally sourced meals they prepare at their farm. They value knowing where their food comes from and the care and respect for the land that nurtures it.

The farm stand is a place where neighbors run into each other in search of fresh eggs, a fresh-baked loaf of bread and perhaps a bit of news about an old classmate or the birth of a new grandchild.

It’s a place that nourishes and connects the community that surrounds it.  That’s what the Pierachs hope Herbst Eatery & Farm Stand can do for the St. Paul neighborhood they call home.

Community

We are setting aside a portion of our profits to support organizations that improve the health and vibrancy of South St. Anthony Park and surrounding neighborhoods. We’ll support the arts, local schools, environmental causes as well as causes that are important to our staff.

Partners

The cornerstone of our culinary program is sustainably and ethically produced products from The Dover Producers, a group of young farmers we brought together to form a cooperative that exclusively serves our restaurant and market. These farmers are working closely with our culinary team to grow produce and raise high-quality, non-GMO lamb, beef, and pork to our specifications and standards.

The Wisconsin Growers Cooperative, made up of nearly 36 small family farms in Western Wisconsin, are also a primary produce supplier to Herbst Eatery & Farm Stand.

Surcharge

Herbst Eatery & Farm Stand is founded on five values:

  • A commitment to building community

  • A commitment to supporting local, small scale farmers, producers and makers

  • A commitment to quality and creativity in everything we do

  • A commitment to creating a healthy culture for our people built on fun, inclusivity, empathy, equity and learning

  • A commitment to sustainability in our practices

Consistent with our values, we have instituted a 5% surcharge, which is not considered a gratuity. The surcharge is invested 100% in our staff, allowing us to offer quality healthcare, a retirement plan, culture-building activities, professional growth and learning opportunities and other benefits not usually available to hospitality workers.

Pursuant to Minnesota Statute Section 177.23, subdivision 9, this surcharge is not a gratuity for employee service.
